Website vs online store: what a boutique needs

A boutique can sell from a R4,000 website with WhatsApp ordering or a R15,000 online store. This is the honest test for which one fits your rail. Last updated: November 2026 · by the Website Man team

The two routes

One range, two ways to sell it.

Every option below shows your clothes properly and loads fast on a phone. The difference is who does the checkout work.

A boutique with a small range and a loyal following can sell from a website with WhatsApp ordering from R4,000. An online store from R15,000 earns its price when the catalog is large, stock turns over often, and customers want to pay without messaging you first. Here is how to tell which one you are.

Option From price Best when
Landing page with your range and WhatsApp ordering: photos, sizes, prices, order buttonFrom R4,000You sell in drops, the rail is small, and the messages you already answer turn into sales
Animated website: the same range, plus scroll movement and lookbook pacingFrom R6,000The clothes carry the brand: new season imagery, a lookbook, and a page that has to feel as considered as the label
Full website: home, about, range, gallery, contactFrom R10,000You need more than one page: your story, a care guide, stockists, and a range that changes every season
Online store: catalog, cart, checkout, accounts, adminFrom R15,000The range is too big to answer piece by piece, stock changes weekly, and customers buy at night without asking if it is available

Neither route is a downgrade. A boutique that replies on WhatsApp within minutes will often outsell a bigger store with slow stock updates. If you are still weighing page counts, read how many pages your site needs. Every price sits on Website Man pricing.

The decision

Three questions that settle it.

Answer these before you spend a rand on either route.

1. Count the range and how often it turns.

If you carry one rail and restock in drops, a page with photos and a WhatsApp button is enough. Every new piece is a message, not a stock upload. Past a few dozen pieces with sizes and colours, answering "is this still available" starts to cost more time than a store costs money.

2. Follow the sale you already make.

Look at last month. If orders started in a direct message and ended in an EFT, your customers are already comfortable with a conversation, and a site that opens WhatsApp keeps that habit. If people ask for a size, then go quiet when you send banking details, checkout on the page removes that pause.

3. Price the life after launch.

A store is not finished at launch. Stock, sizes, returns, and delivery fees all need upkeep, with maintenance from R500 per month. A website needs less. Both need traffic: SEO from R1,000 per month or Google Ads from R2,500 per month if strangers must find you. Read how long a store takes to build before you promise a date.

Questions

The boutique questions owners ask.

Do I need an online store to sell clothes?

No. If you take orders over WhatsApp and Instagram already, a website with your range, prices, and a WhatsApp button from R4,000 can carry the same sales without cart fees or stock admin.

When does a boutique need a full online store?

When the range is too large to explain in messages, customers want to pay at night, and you cannot answer size and stock questions fast enough. A store from R15,000 handles catalog, cart, checkout, and accounts.

What does it cost to run a boutique store?

Maintenance from R500 per month, payment gateway fees per sale, and domain and hosting paid directly to the provider with no markup. SEO plans start at R1,000 per month and Google Ads at R2,500 per month if you need new customers.

Can I start with a website and add the store later?

Yes. Keep the photography and copy from the first build and add the store when the range and order volume justify it. You approve the preview before you pay on every option.
