Do Google Ads work for small SA businesses?

Sometimes. Ads buy attention from people who are already searching, and whether that attention pays depends on three numbers you can check before you spend. Management from R2,500 per month, with your ad budget separate and in your hands. Last updated: October 2026 · by the Website Man team

The bill

What R2,500 a month actually pays for.

One number is our fee. The other is Google's, and it never passes through us.

Yes, Google Ads can work for a South African small business, but only under three conditions: people already search for what you sell, your profit per sale covers the cost of a click, and the page the ad points at turns clicks into enquiries. Skip any one and the budget disappears without a sale.

Two numbers, one decision. If the management fee plus a realistic ad budget is more than a new customer is worth to you, the campaign cannot work by arithmetic, however well it is run. Compare the other route in SEO prices in South Africa, or see every line we charge on Website Man pricing.

The three tests

Three tests before you spend a cent.

Each one can be answered in an afternoon, with no agency and no budget.

1. Is anyone searching for it?

Open Google's Keyword Planner, which comes free with an Ads account, and type the words a customer would use. If the searches exist, you can buy a place in front of them. If nobody searches, no budget fixes it: that demand has to be created with content, social media, or time, and search ads are the wrong tool for the job. A burst geyser gets searched the minute it bursts. A brand nobody knows does not get searched at all.

2. Does the profit cover the click?

Google sells clicks by auction, so the price moves with competition and season. Work out your ceiling before you bid: profit per sale multiplied by the share of clicks that turn into sales. If a job leaves you R1,000 and one click in twenty becomes a job, you can pay up to R50 a click and break even. Above that, a busier phone still loses money. The management fee sits on top, so divide it by the sales you expect and add that to the cost of each one.

3. Does the page convert the click?

An ad buys a visit, not a sale. The click lands on a page that either answers the searcher's question in one screen or sends them back to the results. One offer, one action, a number they can tap, and a page that opens on a weak signal. Ads pointed at a vague or slow page buy traffic for whoever ranks below you, because the visitor returns to Google and clicks the next result. The block order matters more than the budget: see what to put on a small business homepage.

Questions

The Google Ads questions owners ask.

Do Google Ads work for a small business in South Africa?

They can, when people already search for what the business sells and the numbers clear. A plumber with a burst geyser on his hands is ready to buy. A brand new product that nobody searches for has to be taught to the market first, and search ads cannot do that job.

How much do Google Ads cost per month?

Management starts from R2,500 per month and covers the campaign build, keyword list, ad copy, tracking and monthly tuning. Your ad budget is separate and paid straight to Google, and it stays in your hands, so you set the monthly cap. Add the two together for the real monthly figure.

How long before Google Ads bring enquiries?

Google reviews every new ad before it can run, and billing has to be set up, so the first clicks arrive after launch rather than at the moment you press publish. Clicks can come within days. Knowing whether the campaign pays for itself takes longer, because a handful of clicks is not a pattern.

Should I run Google Ads or SEO first?

If you need enquiries this month and people already search for your service, ads first. If the budget is small and the need is steady, SEO from R1,000 per month builds visibility that keeps working between payments, though it is slower to show. Many small businesses run a capped ad budget while the SEO compounds.
